As for kanji books, I have this set of small, pocket sized books called "Tonaete Oboeru Kanji no Hon" (唱えておぼえる漢字の本) that I got from a second-hand bookstore in Tokyo. There's one book for each grade level. It's one kanji per page, with the meaning, sample words and a diagram on how to write it. Drawings make up more than half of each page explaining where the kanji is derived from---which is just awesome for visual learners like me. :D
When it comes to Japanese aid books, you can't go wrong with the 3A Network (that's the name of the publisher, "スリーエーネットワーク"). They make the best Japanese learning books available. I started with Minna no Nihongo I-II, and even now the stuff I learned there is invaluable. I'm using the Kanzen Master series now (also from 3A). All their books also comes with answer sheets, so it's great for self-studying. :D
thanks den, and feel free to call me jacque or mamikochan like joan. that's from youtubeishness.haha! i appreciate the tips. i wondered about that (using manga). i used to do novels in french and spanish back ages ago in jr high and hs. any tips on a good kanji guide to look stuff up in? or any other guide books that might be helpful since i'm doing this on my own. ^_^
@moonstruechild55: You're welcome.^^ *adds as contact* As for tips...well... all I did was read a LOT of manga (at the start I read ones with furigana, then later on I read ones without) I also started reading children's books, then moved on to adolescent's books. :D I read Harry Potter 1-4 in Japanese when I wasn't that good in kanji yet. :D It took FOREVER. XD (and I scribbled tons on notes on the books). XD
@salatinada: I'd be honored! :D I've translated chapters of Grand Sun, W Juliet II, Blue Ramun, Moshikashite Vampire, and It's Not Like That Darling. Currently my projects are: Full House Kiss, Gekka no Kimi, Honey Hunt, Ludwig Kakumei Rasetsu no Hana, and Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. I work under the name "Razril". So if you see that name, it's me :D I translated for other groups before but now I mostly just work for Aerandria. XD
